How to choose a tool

Top 6 criteria

Criteria #1. Supported Language.

All tools support English, but if you want to write in other languages, make sure it's supported.

Criteria #2. Form-based tool vs editor-based tool.

You can see in our comparison table 2 types of tools, form-based and editor-based.

Form-based tools have a form that you fill in and hit enter. Often you start with an idea or starter sentence, chose some parameter, like the tone of the voice, and you hit a button.

You then receive one or more sentence from the AI that you can chose from.

Editor-based tools have an editor, a blank canvas where you can type normally, and then you "call" the AI using commands.

Some tools have both options.

Criteria #3. Unlimited vs limited words.

If you don't write a lot, the limits might not be a factor.  But if you write on a daily basis, be aware that these limits can be easily reached.  An unlimited tool would allow you to output as much as needed without the fear of running out of monthly credits.

Criteria #4. Your workflow and the tools you are currently using.

If you are using an editor like scrivener or if you type directly your blog post in WordPress, you can consider using a tool with a chrome extension.

The table above shows a few.

Criteria #5. Multiple tools are often useful.

From reading a lot of feedback about these tools in various Facebook groups, many people use 2 or more tools, as the outputs can vary.  Sometimes a second tool can output something more creative that can spark something to go over your writer's block.

Criteria #6. Price

Most tools are between $19 and $59 per month on a subscription basis.  I definitely think a tool like ShortlyAI is worth it at $25/month on a yearly basis. It's a great deal.

Even Conversion.ai at $109/month is a great investment, as it's designed for business owners, marketers and copywriters.

But there are great lifetime deals at the moment, you pay once for a lifetime access.  There are 6 lifetime deals shown in green our table above.

Top 5 Benefits of using AI writing tools

Benefit #1. It cures the writer's block

Writer’s block is not a myth.  The best writers in the world dread it.  But with these tools, you simply type in some words, ideas or concepts and it "magically" spits out many ideas to get you unblocked.

Benefit #2. It makes writing faster

Finding the right word, the right sentence structure can be hard.  But you can type things as they come out from your brain right into any of these tools, and it will show a better way to say it.  Most reviews will show people save

Benefit #3. It helps with business

If you are running a business, coming up with the right word can be hard.  AI can now help you re-write sentences and give you suggestions on how to say things.

Benefit #4. It helps to find new ideas or topic to write about.

Searching for a topic? Simply type a word, phrase, or question and get thousands of relevant ideas.

Benefit #5. It makes writing fun.

I used to hate having to write.  But now I can say I enjoy it.  If I get stuck, at the idea, sentence or word level, I get unstuck in 10 seconds.

What I personally like about Copy.ai.

Copy.ai was designed for copywriting, and they got the domain name for it.  If you have a business, or run marketing, this tool should be able to help you.

One other great feature is their tone chooser. Copy.AI allows to choose from Friendly, Luxury, Relaxed, Professional, Bold, Adventurous, Witty, Persuasive, Empathetic.

So if you want to do marketing, and not sound too "salesy", you should find the right tone.

Good things I have heard from Copy.ai.

On facebook, I have read comments like these about using Copy.ai in rare industries or niches :

  • ...We wanted to see which of the tools would generate the best description of the group. We used Nichess, GoCopy, and Copy AI. All of them produced decent output, but Copy AI was strikingly different. Each and every output was great. I have to say the guys at CopyAI are doing something special, keep it up.
  • I agree, I’ve done tons of tests with different platforms and Copy AI is my favorite. I’ve used it for several clients in very obscure industries and the outputs were incredible. My clients have been blown away by the results.

Copy.ai alternatives

Ther is no doubt Copy.ai is a great tool.  But if you are looking at a copywriting-focused assistant, you want want to have a look at two in particular: CopySmith and Conversion.ai (see table above).

1) Copysmith boast 8,000+ clients and with their 10 million dollars in funding, will continue develop their tools.

2) ConversionAI is another great tool for teams.  Their editor makes writing easier, and ConversionAI is a focused on marketing, and they listen to their clients to make their tools better.

Copysmith review

Copysmith is similar to Copy.ai. Enter some seed text, and it will output some new ones.

One unique feature they have is their blog post generation.

It can also write full blog posts.

The interface

About the company

Copysmith was originally funded by a TechAccel grant from the McGill Engine in Montreal. It raised $10 Million in funding on April 21st 2021.

Jarvis (formely Conversion.ai) review

The interface

Jarvis is another tool built with a GPT-3 license.  It is priced differently, it's cheaper for the entry plan, but with a limit on words.  They have aquired the freeflow GPT-3 tool Shortly in June 2021 and it's not integrated in their Boss Mode plan.  It offers the flexibility of an editor, along with tools already pre-configured.

About the business

Conversion.ai was built by the same team that built UseProof who went through the prestigious YCombinator accelerator program.

They have acquired Shortly AI in June 2021.

They have announced having raised 6 million dollar on July 1st 2021.

Shortlyai review

Shortly have been aquired by Jarvis in June 2021.  The product remains as a stand-alone service.  Features of Shortly have been integrated in Jarvis Boss Mode Plan.

The interface

ShortlyAI has the cleanest interface from all of the AI writing assistants that I have found.
Right in the middle, you start typing text.

If you want to "call" the AI assistant, you simply "ask it" with a command.

You can click the button Write For Me on the left-hand panel or simply do CTRL + Enter (⌘ + Enter on a mac).  You will see ShortlyAI write in front of you, and it takes only a few seconds to appear.

If you don't like the output, delete it, and try again.

But there is more you can ask it.

Here are some commands you can use.

You can type /commands to expand what you just wrote, or to re-write it, or toshorten it.

And as soon as you get the output that makes sense.  You continue writing.

Chad from the AI Content Dojo has a great YouTube channel and this list of amazing commands you can use with Shortly.

Other great features

  • Markdown language

Supported Languages

  • English

About the business

ShortlyAI was founded by Qasim Munye.  The simplicity of the product is what makes this tool a great tool for all writers.

ShortlyAI was acquired by ConversionAI in June 202.1

Content Villain review

I've discovered ContentVillain through their deal on AppSumo.

There are 2 unique things about them.

First, they have a bespoke service where they can create your own AI text generator.  If you are not getting results from other tools, speak to them, they might be able to find a solution for you.

The second unique thing about them is their API development. It is possible to their tools (and GPT-3) and send the output by clicking a webhook button. The information can be processed by tools like Zapier, Integromat or IFTTT (or your own code).

About the business

Stuart Lansdale is a technical guy and publishing regular content on his YouTube channel.

They are running a lifetime deal right now.

Rytr review

Rytr is a web-based AI writing software which uses both a form-based approach with an editor on the right-hand side.

You start by creating a document.  Then you fill the information in the form on the left-hand side.

Choose the language, the tone, a use case and a starter sentence.

Choose from 1 to 3 variants and hit the orange button.

The content will be written by the AI on the right-hand side.

You can then modify the text in the editor.  If you need the AI again, simply fill the form on the left, or select some text in your document and use one of the 4 tools that will turn on: Expand, Shorten, Rephrase or Append

I have tried it, and it works great.  You can see some examples from this screenshot.

The interface

The interface is clean and simple.  You can focus on the text and use the AI tools on the left-hand side or the top.

Pros

  • Free flow editor.
  • Overall clean design.
  • Can change the language and tone for all of the content types.
  • You can select some text inside the editor and you have a button that will appear to expand, shorten, rephrase or append.

Cons

  • When the AI doesn't return something meaningful, you can click the "Ryte More" button, but you can only do it 3 times per minute.
  • The drop-down menu to change the "use case" involves some scrolling and searching to find the right type.  To have a pop-up that shows all options in one screen would save a few clicks.
  • No Keyboard shortcuts at this time.

Pricing

It is priced at $19/month (or $15/month when paid yearly) for unlimited access. This is one of the cheapest options for tool with an editor.

A lifetime license for a one-time fee of $39 for 50,000 characters/month is available right now.

Hi everyone. If you have any questions about which tool to get, just write it here. I will do my best to give you my insights or do some research.

  • Good read! Have you checked out Rytr’s (rytr.me) AI writing assistant yet? Arguably the best one in the market atm, definitely worth a mention.

    • Denis Ethier says:

Thanks for sharing, I will add it to our list.

  • Hmm, seems like some of your info is outdated I use Copysmith and they support all languages and have a base price of 19$ (which is what I’m using).

    • Denis Ethier says:

Thanks for letting me know, I have updated it!

  • Patryk Miszczak says:

    Very in-depth research.

    Thanks for sharing!.

  • Excellent research.
Still quite confused on which one I should invest in.
I am mainly going to generate captions for our Social Media pages and probably will be sending out newsletter in the future.

    • Denis Ethier says:

All the tools are good. For social media and email, Nichesss is great (and only $59 for a lifetime license with unlimited usage) For more advanced copywriting features, Copy AI and Conversion AI are both good. All the tools have either a free trial or a money back guarantee.

  • Have you tried copysharkai? I’ve tried them, before I knew about the others, and hope that a pro, like you, will do a comparison review on it.

    • Denis Ethier says:

      Hi David,

I have heard of them, but never had the chance to try them. They are definitely on my list to try.
